Code Management: Prepare and Share Your Software Online
What: This workshop will cover recommended practices for sharing software and code, and how to properly cite your code using the GitHub integration with Harvard Dataverse. GitHub is one of the most widely-used code repositories and is recommended for active software development. Digital object identifiers (DOIs) allow other researchers to cite your code and lets you track its reuse. To properly share your code, you'll want to register a DOI for your code by depositing it in an open repository.
Why: Funders and journals expect code to be deposited in a DOI-minting repository to be accessible and citable. By releasing software and code you have created and/or developed in your research, you are further contributing to the research landscape and making your approach to research more open, transparent, and reproducible.
How: This is a free 1-hour online workshop, consisting of lecture, interactive demos, and discussion. We will review good practices for code development and sharing, and walk through how to upload GitHub repository content to a Dataverse dataset. The webinar recording will be shared with all who register.
Where: Online via Zoom (link provided upon registration).
Who: This seminar is open to faculty, research staff, postdoctoral researchers, and students from all disciplines. Attendees will benefit from a working knowledge of git and GitHub. You are encouraged to also attend Harvard Chan Bioinformatics Core's free webinar "Introduction to Git and GitHub" on April 15. Online webinars are open to the public research community.
