ASL Workshop: Beyond Words: Understanding Deaf Culture, ASL, and the Role of CODAs in Healthcare In-Person

In observation of National Deaf Awareness Month, Countway Library is launching a series of one-hour workshops for students, residents, and healthcare professionals led by staff member MJ Grein. Learn essential Deaf culture concepts, basic medical ASL (American Sign Language) signs, and best practices for working with interpreters. The workshops include interactive practice, real-world examples, and Q&As, and is designed to improve cultural competency and communication with Deaf patients.

MJ Grein is a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA) and has worked as an ASL interpreter for over 30 years. Raised in a Deaf household, MJ brings a unique perspective to communication, culture, and advocacy. Their experience spans medical, educational, and community settings, with a focus on helping healthcare professionals connect respectfully and effectively with Deaf patients.
